See Wildlife Up Close!

Soaring, burrowing, foraging — there’s nothing like observing birds from a kayak. Our birding tour at Milltail Creek in the Alligator River Refuge is a relaxing bird-venture! On this kayak tour, you’ll explore the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge and its unique habitats for birds and other animals alike.

This wildlife refuge is home not only to alligators, bears, and red wolves but also to wading birds, songbirds, warblers, woodpeckers, raptors, and others. Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge provides habitat to over 250 species of bird. On our river kayak tours, we often see Prothonotary Warblers, Wood ducks, northern cardinals, killdeer, red-bellied woodpeckers, hairy woodpeckers, and pileated woodpeckers. The refuge is home to the largest concentration of black bears on the east coast. Black bears often roam the tree lines, relax in the tall grasses, or climb the pines.

Our birding guide will take you on an engaging and leisurely paddle for an up-close view of birds, wildlife, and plants. En route, you will also learn about bird identification, bird migration, and the rich history of logging and moonshiners in this area. Our guide loves the outdoors and can’t wait to share her passions with you. Come paddle with us and discover your inner birder.
