The Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge is home to alligators, bears, the rare and very endangered red wolf, and various unique birds native to the inner banks. Outer Banks Kayak Adventures expert kayak guides will lead you on a unique adventure through the beautiful Picosin Forest.

This Wildlife Refuge provides habitat to an extensive list of over 250 bird species and countless other wildlife species. On this tours, we often see Prothonotary Warblers, Wood Ducks, Northern Cardinals, Killdeer, Red-bellied Wood Peckers, Hairy Wood Peckers, and Pileated Wood Peckers. The refuge is also home to the East Coast’s largest concentration of black bears. Black bears often roam the tree lines, relax in the tall grasses, or climb the pines.

While touring the Alligator River Wildlife Refuge, learn about the history of logging and moonshiners in this area, all while kayaking beneath grand bald cypress and loblolly pine trees. Our Alligator River kayak tour is an unforgettable experience you don’t want to miss! This tour is an excellent two-hour adventure suitable for beginner and experienced paddlers of all ages.

Which Kayak is Right for You and Your Group?

  • We recommend children 12 and under paddle in a tandem (double) kayak with an adult, but it’s not a requirement.
  • If your child is ages 10-12 and you’re super confident in their kayaking ability, you can request that your child paddle a single kayak (please do so only if you’re confident your child can paddle the entire trip). Only put a child in a single kayak If you are confident they can paddle for 1 1/2 – 2 hours by themselves.
  • Unless requested otherwise, all children ages 12 and under will be placed in a tandem (double) kayak with an adult.

What to bring

  • A towel for after the tour (you’ll want to leave it in your car)
  • Shoes and clothing you don’t mind getting wet
  • Consider insect repellent, a rain jacket if it might rain, and a dry bag.
