Frequently Asked Questions

Is experience required?

No experience is required. We love sharing the joy of paddling with beginners! We teach you how to paddle and we’ll provide tips along the way if needed.

Do the kayaks have a weight limit?

The maximum recommended weight for our single kayaks is 350 LBS. The maximum recommended weight for our tandem kayaks is 500 LBS.

Are there any age requirements?

No age requirements at all. We recommend children under 12 years of age paddle in a tandem kayak with an adult.

Where do we go for our tour?

Our tours meet at the tour location. Each tour location along with directions and/or addresses are listed on the tour pages of our website. For example, the Kitty Hawk Maritime Forest tour meets in Kitty Hawk (Bob Perry Rd), the Alligator River tour meets at Alligator River (Buffalo City, NC), and so on.

What should I bring?

Plenty of water, a snack, sunscreen, a towel for after the tour, and shoes and clothing you don’t mind getting wet. You may also want to consider a hat, sunglasses, insect repellent, a rain jacket if it might rain, and a dry bag.

What about COVID-19?

We ask all groups to maintain social distancing from other groups. If you are sick or have a fever please do not go on a kayak/SUP tour. We continue to operate in accordance with CDC & NC guidelines.

What about gratuity?

Our guides do accept and greatly appreciate tips! Standard gratuity is usually 20%, but feel free to tip your guide more if you loved their tour!

Do the tours leave at specific times?

Yes, please refer to our calendar for our tour times and locations. We are sometimes able to fit in different times or private tours for your group that aren’t on our calendar. Please call with inquiries.

Do you have tandem (double) kayaks?

Yes, we have tandem kayaks as well as single kayaks. If you include children 12 & under when making a reservation online we’ll automatically put the child in a tandem kayak with an adult. If your child has kayaking experience and you feel the child can paddle the entire tour on his/her own you can make a note in the “notes” section to request a single kayak for your child. We will do our best to accommodate your request.

What if I want to bring my dog?

Please contact us about bringing a small to medium sized dog. Maximum recommended size is 35lbs. We may not be able to accommodate pets during peak season. Dogs must be kept on a leash and you should clean up after your pet.

What kind of kayaks do you use?

We use Perception Tribe 11.5 & 13.5 kayaks for our tours and rentals. We buy new kayaks every year so you’ll have a nice new kayak that’s super comfortable. Perception Tribe kayaks are extremely stable and easy to get in and out of. The built in seats feature extra padding and the backrests are adjustable for maximum comfort. We’re proud to use Perception kayaks that are rotational molded and hand assembled in the USA.

What if it’s raining?

We paddle in the rain and wind, but not during thunderstorms.

Do we need to arrive early?

We ask that you plan to arrive 10-15 minutes prior to your tour start time.

What is the cancellation policy?

All cancellations must be made at least 48 hours prior to your scheduled tour. We do paddle in the rain and wind but not during thunderstorms. If there is inclement weather we will reschedule your tour or issue a refund. Rescheduled tours will not be issued refunds if you decide not to attend the tour for any reason. Participants should plan to arrive 10-15 minutes prior to the tour start time. No shows or late arrivals are charged full price and a refund will not be given. If you choose to cancel a schedule tour for any reason  within 48 hours, a refund will not be given.

What if we’re late to our kayak tour?

Our kayak & SUP tours begin and end at specific times. We cannot wait for late arrivals because it’s unfair to other customers on the tour. You should plan to arrive 10-15 minutes prior to the start time.

Are reservations required?

Reservations are required. We can usually accommodate last minute additions to our tours.
